Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and then risked her life again and again, returning to the South to guide dozens of other enslaved people to freedom along a secret network called the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War she also worked as a scout and nurse for the Union Army, becoming the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war. She is remembered as one of the bravest figures in American history.
