Sally Ride was a physicist and astronaut who became the first American woman to travel into space in 1983, aboard the space shuttle Challenger. Before joining NASA she was also a nationally ranked tennis player. After her spaceflying career she spent years encouraging girls to pursue science, technology, and space exploration through a company she founded.
