Matsuo Bashō was a Japanese poet who perfected haiku, a short three-line poem that captures a single, vivid moment, often from nature. He spent much of his life traveling on foot across Japan, writing poems inspired by the places and people he encountered along the way. His travel diary Narrow Road to the Deep North is considered one of the great classics of Japanese literature.
